Walks of Life, Tuxford
About
The Museum
If you have a nostalgia for yesteryear, you are bound to enjoy a visit to Walks of Life, a nationally important collection of handcarts and hand powered agricultural machinery housed in restored and newly constructed barns on a working farm at Tuxford. The collection is owned and run by Dorothy Harrison, who has spent her retirement saving these important pieces of trade and agricultural history from destruction and lovingly restored them to working condition. Walks of Life really is one of those hidden treasures which is worth a special journey to visit.
The
Collection
The unique collection of old trade handcarts depicting social history on wheels is a fascinating stroll down memory lane to a time in great-grandma's day when our streets bustled with hawkers, tradesmen and vendors. You will see everything from traditional costermongers' barrows to street pianos, from "milk-prams" to undertakers' biers. Imagine the scene of firemen dashing to a blaze pulling a fire fighting barrow - these vehicles all date to an era when the transport of goods and services depended not on petrol, but human muscle power and hard work.
For
the Visitor
Tuxford is well worth exploring, though its glory days as a major coaching town are now eclipsed and many of its fine buildings are gently decaying. Walks of Life is located a short walk from the centre of Tuxford and is set amongst rolling countryside. On fine days a large proportion of the collection is displayed on the lawn between the two barns and group visits are treated to refreshment al fresco. A visit to Walks of Life is an opportunity to share the owner's passion for all things hand propelled. You will be welcome.
